On a big road with grass, a wall, or a barrier down the middle, each side is a carriageway. All the cars on one carriageway go the same way; the cars on the other side go the other way. This is a British word. Americans more often say roadway, or they just talk about lanes and the other side of the highway. A dual carriageway is the whole road: two carriageways, one for each direction, with something between them. A single carriageway is an ordinary road where traffic going both ways shares the same stretch. Though actually, a carriageway is not one painted lane. It is the whole half of the road, and that half may have two or three lanes on it.
組成carriage (an old word for a horse-drawn vehicle, later any vehicle) + way (a road or path): the way for vehicles.
