honorary title holder · noun · B1
A man who has been given a special honour by a king or queen and can put the title 'Sir' before his name.

Picture a man in metal armour on a horse: he holds a rank the king gave him, and in exchange he fights and protects. Two halves live in that one picture — the horse-and-armour fighter, and the honour handed down from a monarch. Later uses each pick up one half: the chess piece keeps the horse, the modern 'Sir' keeps the honour.
