From Middle English kepen up 'to maintain, preserve'.

源自中古英文 kepen up，意思是「維持、保存」。

Think of holding something up with your hand so that it does not drop — a level, a speed, a mood, an amount. It is already up there, and something is always pulling it down; the work is in not letting it fall. That is why the words often carry a feeling of effort: let go, and the thing comes down by itself.

可以想成你用手把一樣東西撐在原來的高度，不讓它掉下來——水準、速度、心情、產量都行。東西本來就在上面，底下一直有股往下拉的力，keep up 講的就是那個一直用力、不讓它掉的動作。所以它常常帶著「要花力氣」的味道：手一鬆，東西就自己往下了。
