One way to picture indicate: a finger pointing — look there, that one. Everything the word does keeps that pointing gesture. A hand points at a person, a light points at the direction a car will turn, a symbol on a map points at what it stands for, and a set of facts points at a conclusion. Nobody is proving anything; something is being aimed at.
