One way to see it: you watch something and then make yourself come out the same way — you take the shape of a model and reproduce it, whether for a laugh or because you admire it.

From the word’s history

From Latin imitārī "to copy, imitate", related to imāgō "image" — the same root family as image, so it is literally "to make an image of".

Wiktionary (imitate) — from Latin imitātus, participle of imitor "to copy, imitate", akin to imāgō "image"
