A useful picture: a mind that does not stop at the first obvious answer — it keeps making new pictures, so what comes out of it feels fresh rather than copied.
From imagine + -ative, and imagine goes back to Latin imāginārī "to picture to oneself", from imāgō "image" — the word is built on making images in the mind.
