One way to hold hark is as a hand going up and a head turning: everything stops, and the ear is pointed at a sound. It is not the ear simply receiving noise, which is hear. It is a person choosing to give a sound their whole attention, and the word is old enough that using it now colours the whole sentence with the sound of an older book.

Recorded as Middle English herken, from a form built on the root of hear plus a -k ending; so the word has carried the idea of listening from the start.
