Behold is a verb meaning to look at something, to see it with your eyes — often something striking, or something you are meant to stop and notice. It is an old, high-sounding word. You find it in the Bible (Behold, I bring you good news) and in old stories. Today people mostly use it for a joke or a bit of theatre: a cook lifts the lid and says Behold! People also say lo and behold when something surprising turns up, as if they were telling a tale. You would not say I beheld the bus on a normal day; you would just say you saw it. There is also a cry Behold! used like a pointing finger: look at this.

From Middle English biholden, from Old English behealdan 'to hold, keep, look at'; be- + hold.
源自古英文 behealdan「看著、守住」，就是 be- 加 hold。
組成be- + hold. From Old English behealdan, which meant to hold, keep, watch over, and also to look at. The ‘look’ sense is the one English kept in behold. Dutch behouden and German behalten still mean ‘to keep’, which shows how the old ‘hold’ meaning lived on elsewhere.
