Gratitude is the feeling you have when someone has been kind, and you want to thank them in your heart — not only with the words thank you. It is a noun. The matching adjective is grateful: you feel grateful; you feel gratitude. People speak of a letter of gratitude, a debt of gratitude, or gratitude toward a person. It is a warm, serious word, at home in a card, a speech, or quiet talk. It is not a gift you hand over, and it is not “free.”

組成From French gratitude, from Medieval Latin grātitūdō, “thankfulness,” from Latin grātus, “thankful.” It took the place of an older English word for thanking.
