If you are indebted to someone, you feel you owe them something because they helped you — usually not money, but gratitude. "I'm deeply indebted to my teacher for her patience" means you feel real and a sense that you owe her something in return, even though nothing will actually be paid back. It can also mean literally owing money, but the "grateful" meaning is more common in everyday speech.
