A small animal that lives by digging. You meet the round hole and the little pile of loose earth first, and the animal itself only sometimes. The name is short, friendly and very American, and that is what lets it travel: when people borrow it, they are borrowing a likeable name, not a description.

Perhaps adapted from Cajun French gaufre, literally honeycomb or waffle: the holes in the ground look like the little hollows in a honeycomb or a waffle. Another suggestion is a Muskogean source. Neither is settled.
