A gofer is the person at work who is sent to fetch things other people want: coffee, a file, a parcel from downstairs. The job is to go and get. It is a casual word, a little old now, and it often names the newest or lowest person in an office. Though actually, companies today more often say assistant, which sounds kinder; gofer can feel as if you are only there to run. People also use it with a smile about themselves: I am just the gofer today. It is not a job title on a door. It is what the running-around feels like.

組成From go + fer, a spelling of for as people say it. A gofer is the one who must go for coffee, go for that file. There is possibly also a joke with the animal gopher, which digs and gathers — but that is only a maybe.
