A person who computer programs. In tech talk this is the everyday job word: a coder code. It feels a little informal next to “programmer” or “software engineer”, though actually many people use all three for the same work. You hear “coder” in start-ups, among students, and in job chats; a company website may prefer “engineer”. It is simply the person-ending -er stuck on code, the same -er as in teacher or baker. It does not mean a person who invents secret spy codes — that picture is older English, and it will send you down the wrong road.
