A groundhog is a small North American animal with thick brown fur, short legs, and a blunt face. It is a rodent — a kind of — not a pig, even though hog is in the name. It digs burrows, eats plants, and sleeps through the winter. People also call it a . In the United States and Canada it is famous for Groundhog Day, 2 February, when a story says the animal “predicts” how long winter will last if it sees its shadow. You will not meet live groundhogs in Taiwan; the word lives in nature talk, kids’ books, and that one February joke.
