Protocol is the correct or official way of doing something, especially in formal or professional situations — the accepted rules for how things should go. 'Safety protocol' is the correct steps to stay safe; 'diplomatic protocol' is the correct manners for how officials from different countries should treat each other. In computers, 'protocol' means the technical rules that let two devices talk to each other, like the 'internet protocol' that lets computers send data around the world.
