A phantom is something that seems real, or that people feel or see, but is not really there — like a ghost. Doctors also use this word for 'phantom pain': when someone has lost an arm or leg, they can still feel pain in the missing part, even though it is gone. You can also use 'phantom' before another noun to mean 'fake' or 'not real,' like a 'phantom company' that does not really do any business.
