English took fountain in the early 15th century from Old French fontaine 'natural spring', from Medieval Latin fontana, from Latin fons 'spring of water'. So the oldest picture is not the stone structure in a park but the place where water comes out of the ground by itself; the built fountain arrives around 1500 — a spring people made. That older 'the water starts here' meaning is what you are still hearing in a fountain of knowledge.
