In boxing, fighters are sorted by how much they weigh, so a small man is not asked to face a huge one. A flyweight sits near the bottom of that ladder: heavier than a , lighter than a . In the old professional numbering, the top of the class is 50.80 (112 pounds — boxing still likes that pound figure).
The fly is the insect. The name is a kind of joke: this boxer is meant to be tiny and quick, like a fly. It has nothing to do with flying through the air.
Though actually, the exact line moves a little with men's professional boxing, women's boxing, and the Olympics. Professional boxing also slices even thinner classes into the gaps (light-flyweight, super-flyweight). MMA uses the word flyweight too, but that class is heavier, around 57 . If you keep one picture, keep this one: boxing, very light, not the very lightest, not yet .
People sometimes stretch it outside sport. Calling an idea or a person a flyweight means “not a serious heavyweight” — informal, and a bit sharp, so be careful with it.
組成fly + weight. Fly is the insect (a hint that this boxer is very light); weight is the boxing-class ending you also see in lightweight and heavyweight.
