The lightest weight class in boxing and in mixed martial arts — fighters who weigh no more than about 47.6 kilograms (105 pounds). In fighting sports, competitors are sorted into groups by body weight so that matches are fair, and this is the very bottom of that ladder, below flyweight. The word works two ways. It names the class itself ("he fights at strawweight", "the strawweight title"), and it names the fighter ("she is a strawweight"). Today most people meet this word through women's MMA, where the strawweight division is one of the best-known; in the UFC the women's strawweight limit is 115 pounds, a bit heavier than the boxing number, because each organisation sets its own limits. That is worth knowing: the exact kilogram figure depends on which sport and which governing body you are talking about, but the meaning — "the lightest class" — never changes. "Straw" here is doing the work of "almost nothing", the same idea as in "light as a feather". It is a technical sports word; outside sport you will rarely see it.
