In boxing, a bantamweight is a fighter in a light weight class: heavier than a , lighter than a . One common professional limit is 53.52 (118 pounds). Though actually, the exact number shifts a little by organisation and by amateur versus professional rules, so treat that figure as “about that weight,” not a law of nature.
The name is bantam + weight: the class is named after the small bantam chicken. You will see the same -weight pattern in , , heavyweight. It is sports language, mainly boxing and sometimes other combat sports.
Outside the ring, calling someone “a bantamweight” as a joke about their size can sound . In the sport it is simply the class they fight in, not an insult.
