    口語To fail a test, an exam, or a school subject.

    文法及物、不及物兩種都可以：後面可以接受詞，也可以不接。

    「flunk」是美式口語裡的「被當」，指考試或一門課沒過。它跟 fail 意思一樣，但語氣輕鬆很多，是同學之間會用的字，不會出現在成績單或正式信件上。台灣學生說的「我這科被當了」剛好對得上 I flunked that class。注意它後面可以直接接科目（flunk chemistry），不用加 in。

    口語If a teacher flunks a student, they give that student a mark that is too low to pass.

    文法及物動詞：動作後面要接受詞。

    同一個 flunk，方向反過來了：另一層是學生自己沒過，這一層是老師把學生當掉。判斷靠受詞——flunk the exam 是考試沒過，flunk her 是把她當掉。中文剛好也有這組對照：「我被當了」跟「老師把我當了」。一樣是美式口語，所以用這個字的多半是學生在講老師，老師自己寫評語時會用正式的 give a failing grade。
