exam is short for examination. Its Latin root examen meant the tongue (pointer) of a balance—the needle that shows the weight; examinare was "to weigh." An exam still weighs what you know.

exam 是 examination 的縮寫。字根 examen 在拉丁文裡指天平上的指針——那根顯示重量的針;examinare 就是「秤重」。考試至今仍是在秤你會多少。
