You can picture 'fifty' as the bare number 50 — and then watch that one number get borrowed to label different things that happen to land in the 50–59 range, or that are simply worth 50. The plain count comes first; from there it tags a decade of years (the fifties), an age range, a band of temperature, and even a worth 50.
