Think of a facility as something set up so a task becomes easy to do — the rooms, gear, or services put there so people can actually go and do that thing.

From the word’s history

From Latin facilis 'easy to do' (from facere 'to do'). The original idea is 'ease of doing', which branched two ways in English: things provided to make an activity easy, and a natural ease in doing something.
