Words said over someone or something, and afterwards it is not the same. A spell is laid on a mirror, a forest, a person — and whoever meets it is held, drawn in, unable to walk away. Every other use keeps the holding and lets the magic fade by degrees: a garden or a voice that holds you the way a spell would, and, in games, the spell put back on a real object with a number attached to it.

From the word’s history

Middle English enchaunten, from Old French enchanter, from Latin incantāre; a doublet of English incant. The oldest layer is words spoken over someone.
