- 1詛咒；魔咒
A hex is an evil curse that is supposed to bring trouble — bad luck, sickness, a team that cannot win. People also use it as a verb: to hex someone is to put that curse on them. The word came into American English from Pennsylvania German, the German spoken by some , from a word for witchcraft and witch. It still feels a bit folksy and American; you hear it in stories, jokes (“they put a hex on our team”), and old-fashioned talk more than in formal writing. Though actually, it is not the first word Taiwan students need for “curse” or “spell,” and it has a noisy neighbour: computer people say hex for , which has nothing to do with magic.

First attested about 1830, from Pennsylvania German hexe 'to practise witchcraft', from German hexen; compare Hexe 'witch'.
