Picture the whole business of teaching and learning — knowledge being passed to someone and taken in, usually over years at school or college. 'Education' is that process of being taught and growing in knowledge. From that one process the word stretches to the teaching of a single subject, to the whole system of schools that does the teaching, and to any experience that suddenly teaches you something.
