An eye-opener is an experience that teaches you something you did not expect. You thought you understood; then the day showed you otherwise. A first trip to another country can be an eye-opener. So can a quiet talk that tells you how hard someone's life really is. People often say a real eye-opener after something that surprises them and stays with them. It is friendly spoken English. Though actually, it is not a tool and not something you wear. Older speakers sometimes used eye-opener for a strong drink in the morning that wakes you up, but that is not this meaning, and you will rarely meet it that way now. Here the opening is in the mind: as if your eyes were closed to a fact, and now they are not.
