A hand pulling a line across paper. The pencil or pen is dragged along, and what it leaves behind is the picture — lines, not blocks of paint. That pulling is the thread through the whole word: you can look at what got pulled onto the paper, at the skill of pulling those lines, or at pulling a name out of a hat.
