Attested from the 1570s as an agent noun from draw — 'a box-shaped receptacle that can be drawn or pulled out of a cabinet, bureau, table, etc., by sliding it horizontally'. Earlier, drawer had meant 'one who draws water from a well' (mid-14c.).
