To doodle is to draw while your mind is somewhere else — little shapes, boxes, flowers, faces in the margin, lines that go nowhere. You are not trying to make a picture. You are waiting, listening, or thinking about something else, and the pen keeps moving. The drawing you get is also called a doodle. Children doodle. Adults doodle in meetings. It is an ordinary, informal word, fine in speech and in relaxed writing. Though actually, the word is older than this drawing sense. A few hundred years ago, a doodle was a fool — a simple person — and that is the joke in the song “Yankee Doodle.” The “draw without really thinking” meaning came later. People also stretch the word: a Google doodle is a special picture on the Google page, made on purpose, so that is doodle as a fun label, not the original “I wasn’t really drawing” idea. Doodling is not the same as designing, and it is not the same as graffiti on a wall.

From Low German dudeldopp 'simpleton'; the 1930s 'scribble' sense came from this or from dawdle.

組成Originally a dialect word from Low German dudeldopp, “simpleton,” and influenced by dawdle. Compare German dudeln, “to play the bagpipe.” In the early 1600s a doodle was a fool; that old meaning is the joke in “Yankee Doodle.” American dude may come from this, but that is only a maybe. The “draw without thinking” sense came later.
