You can think of disembodied as something that should have a body attached, and does not. The word itself shows the move: body in the middle, dis- in front of it pulling it away. So what is left is a leftover — a spirit with no form, a hand with no arm, a voice with no speaker. Whatever is left behind still works: the spirit still wants something, the hand still reaches, the voice still tells you the train is late. That is the odd feeling the word carries: not absence, but a part carrying on alone.
