Crud is a rough, informal word for stuff that is unpleasant to look at, smell, or taste — sticky dirt, old food in the sink, green mess on a bathroom wall, the nameless gunk on a tool. Americans use it more than British speakers. It can also mean junk that is worthless: “Get this crud off my desk.” It is not polite, but it is not the strongest bad word either; it is the sound of someone . You would not put it in a formal letter. Though actually, it is an old twin of the word curd, the thick part of sour milk. The meaning slid from “thick stuff” to “nasty stuff.” That is why it still feels messy in the mouth.
組成From Middle English crud, crudde, which meant curd — thick, pressed milk — and any thick dregs. From Old English crūdan, “to press.” Curd is the same word by another path (a doublet).
