Picture a courtroom set up inside the armed forces. Everything a civilian court has is there — evidence, witnesses, people sitting in judgement, a decision at the end — but the rules being tested are military rules, and everyone in the room is in uniform. English uses the one word for the room, for the group of officers in it, and for the hearing they hold. When the same word turns into a verb, it names what happens to the person who is taken into that room.
