From Latin convictus, past participle of convincō "to prove wrong, prove guilty" (com- + vincō "to conquer, overcome"). The idea is of overcoming someone's denial with proof — the same root that gives us convince.
來自拉丁文 convictus，是 convincō（駁倒、證明有罪）的過去分詞，由 com- 加上 vincō「戰勝」組成——原意是「用證據把對方的否認打倒」。它和 convince（說服）其實是同一個源頭的一對雙生字：convince 是把你心裡的懷疑打倒，convict 是在法庭上把被告的否認打倒。注意 convictus 是「過去分詞」，本來就帶著「已經完成」的味道，所以這個字從頭到尾講的都是定案後的狀態。
