A converter is a piece of equipment that changes one form of something into another, so you can use it more easily. A power converter changes electricity from one kind to another — for example so a US can run in Taiwan, or so a laptop can take wall power. A catalytic converter on a car changes dirty exhaust into cleaner gas. Other converters change a signal from analogue to digital. The idea is always: in one form, out another. It is a practical, technical word. In shops you will also hear adaptor, which is close but not always the same: an adaptor may only change the plug shape; a converter may change the voltage or the thing itself. People also write convertor with an o; converter with an e is the common spelling.
