complexity = complex + -ity. Complex itself comes from Latin complexus, past participle of complectī "to entwine, to weave together" (com- "together" + plectere "to plait, to braid"). The braiding image is literal: what is complex is what has been plaited together.
complexity 是 complex 加上名詞字尾 -ity。而 complex 來自拉丁文 complexus，動詞 complectī 是「纏繞、編織在一起」（com- 一起 + plectere 編、辮）。也就是說，「複雜」這個概念在字源上就是一個編辮子的動作——很多股東西被編成一體。這個畫面很值得記住，因為它同時解釋了 complexity 的兩種用法：整條辮子的狀態（很複雜），以及辮子裡的某一股（其中一個複雜之處）。順帶一提，plectere 這一族也留在 perplex（把人繞暈）裡。
