Careful in a looking-all-around way: you think before you move, because you do not want to walk into trouble. A circumspect person is not frozen with fear; they still act, but they check the edges first — money, feelings, the law, what other people might think. It is a somewhat formal adjective. With friends you would say careful or cautious. It is not the same as suspicious (ready to believe something is wrong) and not the same as (afraid to act at all). The old picture behind the word is “looking around,” the opposite of tunnel vision — more like left and right before you step than staring at one spot. A periscope looks around too, though that word is built from Greek pieces, not these Latin ones.
