    Someone who is watching an event or game, especially a sports match, without taking part.

You can picture a spectator as the person in the stands, not on the field — eyes on the game, hands not in it. The word draws a line between the people doing the thing and the people watching it happen.

可以想成「坐在看台上、而不是站在場上的那個人」：眼睛跟著比賽跑，但手沒有伸進去。這個字最主要的功能就是畫出那條線——一邊是下場做事的人，一邊是在旁邊看的人。也因為這條線很清楚，英文才會用 a spectator sport（適合觀賞的運動）或 be a mere spectator（只是袖手旁觀）這樣的說法。
