Chore is a variant of earlier chare/char, from Middle English charr, cherre "an odd job, a turn, an occasion," from Old English ċerr "a turn," from ċierran "to turn." The modern sense of a small recurring household task still carries that idea of a turn that comes around.

chore 是舊拼法 char/chare 的變體，來自中古英語 charr/cherre「零工、一輪、一回」，再往上是古英語 ċerr「一轉」、動詞 ċierran「轉」。「轉一圈又回到你這裡」的意象，正好解釋為什麼 chore 指的是那種週期性、輪流回來的小雜務，而不是一次性的大任務。
