Picture a wide bowl of tilted land. Rain falls anywhere inside it, runs downhill, gathers into little streams, and all of those streams end in the same river or the same lake. The land is doing the catching, and the edge of the bowl is simply where the ground starts tipping the other way. Once you can see that bowl, you can see the word's other use too: swap the rain for people, and the river for a school, and the same shape is still there.

noun · B2

All the land whose rain and streams drain into one river, lake or reservoir. Whatever water falls on that land ends up in the same place.

noun · B2

The area around a school, hospital or station that its students, patients or users come from. If your home is inside it, that is normally the one you are sent to.
