A bridge is a structure built across a gap — a river, a road, a railway — so two sides that were apart can be reached. From this one picture the word spreads two ways: to other things shaped like an arch spanning a gap (the nose, glasses, a violin's bridge, a dental bridge, a ship's raised ), and to the idea of connecting two separated things, literally or figuratively.
