An overpass is a road (or path) built like a bridge so that one road can go over another road, or over a railway, without the two meeting. Cars stay on their own level; nobody has to wait at a crossing. In American English this is the everyday word. British speakers often say flyover for the big road-over-road kind. Though actually, English is a bit here: a small bridge just for people walking is usually a , not an overpass, even though it also “goes over.” The opposite idea is an , which ducks under. As a verb, overpass exists in older writing meaning to pass over or to go beyond, but that use is rare now; the word you will meet is the noun — the structure itself.
