A footbridge is a narrow bridge for people who are walking. It may cross a river, a road, or railway tracks. Cars are not meant to use it. Some are simple wooden bridges in the countryside; some are high metal bridges over a busy street. It is a straightforward, slightly official word — signs, maps, news — not slang.
