Hold the picture of one action: a ball sent low along a line, travelling away from your hand towards something waiting at the far end. Not thrown up in the air, not passed sideways — sent along the ground, with the whole point being what it meets when it arrives. Once you can see that, every use of the word is just a different far end: ten pins on a wooden lane, a small white ball on grass, a bend in a country road, a standing twenty metres away.
