betrothed is betroth plus -ed: the state that is left standing after the promise to marry has been made.
betrothed 是動詞 betroth 加上 -ed。betroth 就是「立下婚約」，-ed 把那個動作凝成一個狀態。所以它指的不是求婚的那一刻，而是承諾成立之後、婚禮還沒到的那一段時間。
