    A bantam is a small kind of chicken — a real farm bird, not a baby of a large hen, but a small breed. They take less space, lay small eggs, and are often kept in backyards. Some have a quite fierce, strutting manner for their size, and that is part of why the name travelled beyond the farm.

    The name was borrowed from Dutch Bantam, a place in Java (now Banten, in Indonesia). Dutch traders met small fowl there, and English kept the place-name for the bird.

    From the little chicken, people also call a small but bold person “a bantam,” and boxing named a light class after the same bird. Those uses grew out of this one. The first picture to hold in your mind is still the small chicken.
