An anti-Semite is a person who hates Jewish people as a group. It is a hard, accusing noun, used in history, news, and serious talk, not as a casual school insult. The word came into English in 1881 from German Antisemit: Wilhelm Marr coined Antisemit in 1879 as a scientific-sounding name that Jew-haters could give themselves, from German antisemitisch, which Moritz Steinschneider had coined in 1860, from anti- + semitisch. Though actually, Semitic in a language classroom is a wide family (Hebrew and Arabic both sit in it), but an anti-Semite, in the way this word has always been used, is not 'someone against Semitic languages.' The fancy piece Semite was borrowed so that hate of Jews would sound like a theory, not like a street shout. Older English already had plainer words for that hate; this one arrived dressed as science.
