Anti-Semitic describes words, jokes, pictures, laws, or attacks that show hate of Jewish people. You can also call a person anti-Semitic, but the word itself is an adjective, not the name of the person (that name is ). You will hear it when someone paints a slur on a Jewish place of prayer, when an old book treats Jewish characters as greedy villains, or when a speaker repeats a secret-plot story about 'the Jews.' It is a serious label; using it lightly drains it. From anti- + Semitic; a piece-by-piece copy of German antisemitisch, first used in 1860 by the Jewish scholar Moritz Steinschneider. Though actually, people argue in the news about the edge of the word — when a harsh comment about Israel is unfair , and when it slides into the older hate. You do not have to settle that argument to learn the core: anti-Semitic is not a fancy for 'rude about a country.' It names hostility aimed at Jews.
