Picture an animal whose hair has simply been allowed to grow: a rabbit so round with fur that you cannot find its feet, a goat with a coat that hangs down like a curtain, a white cat that takes up twice the space it should. That is what the word first points at, a breed marked out by long, soft hair. Everything else the word does follows the hair: brush it off, spin it into thread, knit the thread, and the name travels with it all the way onto a clothing label.

From the word’s history

The source says angora comes from the name of the Turkish city Ankara, known in English as Angora, and that the city name goes back to Ancient Greek ankura, meaning anchor. The place name came first; the animals known from there took it, and then their hair did.
